All aboard! The Tram, also known as a tramcar or streetcar, is one of the oldest types of urban transportation. The UGears Tram with Rails model kit is inspired by the first street-cars and funiculars, and is one of the most romantic models in our portfolio – besides for the fact that the tram is dripping in retro flair, it can also carry a love message to the other side of the track!
In San Francisco, A famous San Francisco cable car was put on rails in 1873 and works to this day! The car was built by a local company man named Andrew Hallidie to solve the problem of horse-drawn carriages being unable to scale a certain very steep hill called "Nob Hill." Hallidie implemented the same engine system he used to ferry ore from gold mines into a passenger car, and the tram proved a great success. Today, the tram is a symbol of heritage and a great example of the old adage "If it isn't broke, don't fix it."
The UGears Tram model kit doesn't need any fixing, but it does need building! 154 precision-cut parts are provided as part of the kit to be constructed according to a precise manual provided. Get up close and personal with a fully functional miniaturized model of the iconic tram's propulsion system which has stood the test of time for over 100 years.
The model car is propelled by a rubber band engine in "tram mode" or can be driven by gravity in its "funicular mode" whereby one end of the rails is tilted up with a special lever to cause the car to roll to the opposite side. Levers on both ends of the rail can be used to lift the entire track off of the ground, creating an elevated ‘bridge’.
The tram’s pantograph serves as a lever which powers the wind-up wheel of the rubber band engine. There’s also a start lever, direction shifter, a brake lever, and even an emergency exit in the roof. And of course, as in most of our models, there’s even a small storage space for stashing something special for a person on the other end of the route!
Add this charming model car to your model city, incorporate it into a model train circuit by elevating its track above a train or simply putting it to the side, or simply situate the tram and its track on your dining room table to ferry messages back and forth between you and a loved one over dinner.
